 Library Festival

For stimulating the reading habit among the students the Library Department is organizing library festival, as part of the library festival, we are conducting competition of various events between the department levels and prizes were distributed to the winners.

During the Academic Year 2002 – 2003, G.S.S Library Department organized a LIBFEST 2002 on 14th November, 2002. Mr.K. Shankaraiah, Regional Librarian, British Council libraries, South India and the President of Madras Library Association (MALA), inaugurated the library Day Celebrations and addressed the students on “The Role of Libraries and Librarians in the Internet Era”.

During the Academic Year 2003 – 2004, G.S.S Library conducted a LIBFEST 2003 on 27th October, 2003. Mr.Randor Guy, Script Writer & Journalist and a well known Film Maker inaugurated the festival and addressed the students. He enumerated the essential role of library developing one’s Personality and knowledge.

During the Academic Year 2004 – 2005, G.S.S Library department arranged the festival of LIBFEST 2004 on 18th October, 2004. Dr. R. Vengan, Chief Librarian, University of Madras inaugurated and addressed the students. He emphasized that students should not only depend on books but also seek information from CDROM resources and also from Internet.

During the Academic Year 2005 – 2006, G.S.S Library celebrated a Library Festival LIBFEST 2005 on 20th October 2005. Dr. Harish Chandra, Chief Librarian, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras inaugurated and addressed the students. He furnished a number of facts regarding network collaborations, digital library initiative and integration of new information technology into library and information services.

During the Academic Year 2006 – 2007, G.S.S Library Department organized a LIBFEST 2006 on 11th October 2006. Dr. K.Nithyanandam, Director, University Library, Anna University, Chennai inaugurated and addressed the students. He explained that a Library is the heart of the institution. It has different kinds of reading materials like books, encyclopedias, directories, Journals, Magazines, CDs, Audio & Video Conferencing & INFLIBNET (Information Library network) to link all the Libraries in Indian to have resource sharing which aim to provide online access of journals through computers throughout India. He also demonstrated in his power point presentation “The Aerofied Technology” in the Library through which the books can be charged, discharged and arranged in a shelf without human interference.

During the Academic Year 2007 – 2008, G.S.S Library department arranged the festival of LIBFEST 2007 on 20th September 2007. Dr. A. Amudhavalli, Professor & Head, Department of Information Science, University of Madras & President of MALA, Chennai inaugurated and addressed the students. She emphasized that students should developed the regular reading habits .She furnished a number of facts regarding Books and other related Information like Biography & Autobiography and integration of new information technology into library and information services.

“Drop Everything and Read (DEAR)”

Every year Scholastic society is organizing a global reading programme. This movement brings together children allover the world on a specified date to Drop Everything And Read at the specified time. The aim was to create in young people an awareness about the wealth of knowledge available & the value of books and the pleasures of reading. At that time everyone in our college, right from the Principal to the Students bring reading material, and at the stroke of noon Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) for the Year.
